Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside it, often affecting areas within the pelvis but sometimes appearing elsewhere in the body. While the cause is still being researched, it is estimated to affect up to 10% of Australian women.
It is one of the leading causes of pelvic pain, infertility and hospitalisation. Symptoms can vary greatly and often do not reflect the severity of the condition. This variation is one reason for delayed diagnosis. Common symptoms may include painful periods, deep pain during intercourse, bowel or bladder discomfort, pain with defecation, lower back pain and difficulty conceiving.
